Warrington Animal Welfare rescues 300 battery farm chickens (bird hobbies)

EXCERPT: Warrington Animal Welfare is appealing for help to rehome more than 300 chickens it helped to rescue from a battery farm. [...] Trustee Julie Pickett said: "It was a five-hour round trip to collect these lovely ladies, but it was worth it. "They have spent their whole lives livening in sheds, having never had the chance to be outside and enjoy the sunshine or the feel of fresh ground under the feet – they truly lived a miserable existence and some of them were in a shocking state." But the hens are now enjoying their newly-found freedom and are searching for permanent, loving homes....

Ravens poisoned on Mid Wales farmland (bird hobbies)

EXCERPT: Ten ravens, a crow and part of a dead lamb were found to have been poisoned on farmland in Mid Wales. [...] Jenny Shelton from RSPB Investigations said: “Shropshire has a history of Diazinon abuse for the purpose of illegally targeting birds of prey and other protected species. We are grateful to Natural England and the police for investigating this matter, which poses a serious threat to wildlife and people. Ravens are incredibly intelligent creatures, able solve problems and form memories similar to our own. These once-scarce birds are gradually starting to recover after persistent persecution at the hands of humans, so it’s disturbing to hear of incidents like this still taking place. This area is also a stronghold for red kites – another bird making a comeback after disappearing entirely from England due to persecution. Poison baits pose a danger to these birds too.”

If you have any information relating to this incident, call West Mercia Police on 101. The RSPB is urging people to be vigilant and report dead birds of prey or ravens this spring – a key time of year for illegal poisoning to take place....

Wallaby adoptions anger wildlife rescue and animal rights groups (animal hobbies)
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article...roups.html

INTRO: A spate of 'inhumane' and illegal wallaby joey adoptions have angered a wildlife rescue service and prompted calls to jail offenders. Bush Babies Wildlife Rescue has been flooded by calls from people who have kept the joeys as pets, usually because they have been orphaned by hunters who have shot their mothers.

Teena Hanslow, who works for the rescue service, said hunters tend to domesticate the joeys because they are 'cute and cuddly' even though it's illegal and cruel. 'A joey is equivalent to a neonatal baby,' staff member Teena Hanslow said 'They look at it and think 'oh, I'd really love to raise it' and they think they're cute and cuddly, but they don't realise they're not like a domestic dog or cat,' she told ABC News. 'A joey is equivalent to a neonatal baby and it requires strict feeding.'

There have also been reports of people killing joeys - usually by blunt force - for bait, according to Kristy Alger from Animal Liberation Australia. She called the practice highly irresponsible and has called for jail time for repeat offenders....
