Does dark matter cause mass extinctions and geologic upheavals?

I was just reading about that yesterday, in the latest New Scientist. That story made the whole things sound extremely speculative at this point. I think that it's probably way to early to "conclude" much of anything. It's just a speculative hypothesis that probably merits further investigation.
