The Magnus Effect

Ironically, it seems to be with regard to the less executed act of kicking (rather than passing) that the Magnus Effect gets mentioned in gridiron football. Throwing the ball with a spin leads to a more accurate pass and controlled / predictable flight, even though it arguably covers less distance than a non-spinning football.
