Ironically, it seems to be with regard to the less executed act of kicking (rather than passing) that the Magnus Effect gets mentioned in gridiron football. Throwing the ball with a spin leads to a more accurate pass and controlled / predictable flight, even though it arguably covers less distance than a non-spinning football.
