New TLC show: "My Husband's Not Gay"

Alot of flack over this one, mostly contending the premise that one can simply not be gay by not living it out. The series follows a couple of married mormon men who claim to be attracted to men yet live their lives as heterosexuals. It will be interesting to see how they construe this as "not being gay." Would a single man who is attracted to women yet doesn't date no longer be heterosexual? No..yet we are asked to accept this in the case of homosexual men. I myself do not date and don't have sex yet know for a fact that my orientation is still gay. We're talking orientation here, not just behavior. I don't personally take offense to TLC airing such a show, being intrigued with this mormon way of defining oneself strictly by one's behavior. The religion-based claim that one can simply decide to not be gay, or heterosexual for that matter. How does this sort of denialism, this closetedness, play out in real life?

Well, I watched the show and it was certainly interesting. The married couples have all made friends with each other and bond over their husbands' SSA (same sex attraction) at get togethers. It's all rather weird watching them discuss the hotness of the waiter at a cafe. "How would you rate him?" "Oh he's dangerous," says one husband. Then there's the "crisis" of one husband wanting to go camping for the weekend with some unknown men. The wife is understandably shaken. What if something happens? A little late night cuddling in the sleeping bag? Yet all the wives claim their marriages are stronger and better for all this openness. More power to 'em I say if that's how they wanna live. But I can't help but see their hatred for "gay" as pretty homophobic. Typically it is the "christian" depiction of a lifestyle of debauchery and sin. That's a stereotype they should overcome.

Just as long as they don't parallel Josh Weed's blog too much. AFAIK, it hasn't even been officially admitted that the show was inspired by his family accounts, much less royalties offered.
