Why Men Don’t Believe the Data on Gender Bias in Science

No, women just have a greater evolutionary tendency to be socially accommodating...admitting they're wrong out of a sense of diplomacy, with the rationalization to avoid cognitive dissonance. Men have an evolutionary tendency to be competitive, where such accommodation signals weakness. But between the sexes, men have no real motive to compete, while women still have a motive to accommodate.

Well, I love physics.  Zinman had made this statement earlier, but as you know, he also complains when we talk over his head.

You’re right.  We do have the tendency to be more socially accommodating, and since Zinman expressed his desire for more science related topics, I told C C that I’d try to poach a few more sciencey types from another forum.

I noticed a mistake that one of the moderators made and decided to pluck a duck. I told him that his answer was incorrect because it was.

No response, and then in the same topic, he calls someone else out on their nonsense. He tells them to not post in the hard science fora in the future.  I said the same thing to him.  It went downhill from there.  Big Grin

Although, my answer was correct, I was called a troll, told to go fuck myself, and then to top it off, Exchemist called me a patronizing, needling, obsessive cunt.  Do you want to know why?  He said that he prefers to debate these issues in such a way that the participants feel encouraged, rather than discouraged, in continuing.  But…you know as well as I do that they’re all drawn to aggressive encounters.

I remembered him asking a question about a new laser-patterning technique that turns metals into light absorbing, water repelling, self-cleaning super-materials.  He said that he was in fact a chemist. I provided him with the link to the paper.  He said that he read it but that it didn’t provide the explanation.  I thought he was just screwing with me because the explanation was right there.  Then he turned right around and said that he hadn’t even read the paper.  In fact, he said that he didn't read the Japanese paper.  Japanese?  You see, JAP was in the link, (Journal of Applied Physics).

I thought that this would show him that I am willing to go out of my way, but it also made him look bad.

You see, a long time ago, AlexG mentioned a video that CptBork posted on Professor Moriarty’s explanation on transparency. Alex wanted to know what caused refraction if the photons don’t interact with the electrons and simply pass through the material.  I sent an email to Brady and told him that the video was causing a lot of confusion in regards to refraction. I even gave him the link to the topic.

There’s lots of glitches in the other forums software.  You can’t even upload an image.  Not only did I prove my point that moderators have the tendency to fly off the handle and ban members by alluding to the time that Dywyddyr himself was banned, but I was also able to show that men do have a difficult time admitting when they’re wrong.  And I don’t care what you say, they do compete with women.

If I was wrong, Markus Hanke is certainly smart enough to point out my errors, but he didn’t. Why is that?  Well, one of the challenges that many women face in male-dominated careers is the lack of support.

So, you see, from my perspective, it’s not that you guys have to cater to our sensitivities.  We’ve just been forced to tip toe around yours for a very-very long time.  I would not want to work in a predominately male environment because it's hostile.

Ah, you seem to be conflating anecdotal encounters, with internet science geeks, with men in general. I assure you, they make up a relatively small fraction of men, with the internet geek variety tending to be especially insecure.

Where I said men have no motive to compete with women, I thought you were talking about them not admitting they are wrong in general. No doubt where women compete in a field as equals, men will react as they do to other men. It just may seem more harsh to you than it would a man, because women are not use to, nor prepared for, that kind of competition.

Yeah, maybe you’re right.

Thanks, Syne!

Oh, BTW, did you notice in the end, how their so-called higher-calibre members needed a moderator/babysitter?

He should have said that I was evil. I would have went along with that. Bwahaha! Big Grin

I'm not interested in moderator drama...it's why I'm here. Adults can take care of themselves for the most part.
