“It is a curious emotion, this certain homesickness I have in mind. With Americans, it is a national trait, as native to us as the roller-coaster or the jukebox. It is no simple longing for the home town or country of our birth. The emotion is Janus-faced: we are torn between a nostalgia for the familiar and an urge for the foreign and strange. As often as not, we are homesick most for the places we have never known.”― Carson McCullers, The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter

“This is a society that is endlessly concerned to vindicate itself, perpetually seeking to justify its own existence.
Everything has to be made public: what you are worth, what you earn, how you live – there is no place here for interplay of a subtler nature. The society’s ‘look’ is a self-publicizing one. The American flag itself bears witness to this by its omnipresence, in fields and build-up areas, at service stations, and on graves in the cemeteries, not as a heroic sign, but as the trademark of a good national enterprise, the US.” — Jean Baudrillard

The System manufactures consent by training kids until grade 12 with artificially-written books/manuals and pie charts on what to think and what to imagine and what to be interested in. The REAL books--our REAL education--was always in the libraries, which was the only place we learned to think and imagine and discover what interests us for ourselves.

“Function? Why function? Who needs more functioning human beings? It's really quite astounding, if you ask me, the sheer quantity of normal in the world today. I think that's the real horror of modern life.” ― James Greer, The Failure

“The library will endure; it is the universe. As for us, everything has not been written; we are not turning into phantoms. We walk the corridors, searching the shelves and rearranging them, looking for lines of meaning amid leagues of cacophony and incoherence, reading the history of the past and our future, collecting our thoughts and collecting the thoughts of others, and every so often glimpsing mirrors, in which we may recognize creatures of the information.”― Jorge Luis Borges, The Library of Babel
