Adriano Celentano

The Elvis Presley of Italy, in a slightly surreal Felliniesque way. He's credited with popularizing rock and roll in Italy in the 1960's and 70's.

(The woman who stands up and gets applause is his wife. They got married in 1964 and are still married today, in their 80's.)

This song is called the "nonsense song" because the lyrics were meant to sound like American English to the Italian ear.

Here's a big production music-video number of the same song from Italian B&W TV (it's all done with mirrors)

The dancing is absolutely great!

Like a cross between Elvis Presley and Benito Mussolini!

Even Americans couldn't understand bits of what was being sung by their own rock bands and British bands back in the 60s (onward). Many of us who feel we can only enjoy music with singing probably regard the human voice itself in more of an instrumental context than we realize or want to admit. Like an instrument, just hit the right notes (and the vocal style) is all that matters -- meaning of the lyrics secondary.

Terry Doolittle (referring to Jagger's incomprehensibility at times in the song): "Mick, Mick! Speak English! ... I was raised by two lesbians? Come on, Mick." --Jumpin' Jack Flash (the film)
