Over the past week I've been watching how again one of the Steam forums (Valve inc) is overrun with bigoted "trolls" who seem hellbent on getting their point(lessness) across. The topic of their combined action this week has been the launch of No Mans Sky created by developers Hello Games.
The arguments that seem to have been thrown around moves from half-truths, to lies to outright defamation. As time has marched on they have become more poisonous with some getting refunds but then still generating a campaign against the game, the company and even it's head developer.
How did this all start? Well it all started with the popular press. The company in it's infancy kept a tight lid on it's development of the game with only a few choice trailers being known. They initially weren't known until the 2014 E3 where their trailer literally stole the show because of how it looked. This generated a huge amount of hype, with a lot of reports "stretching" the interviews (due to the small amount said, poetic license was probably used to fill articles with a bit more content) into the equivalence of belief system. (I'm not saying that Hello Games are gods, however the spread of polymorphic whispers literally had them walking on water and shooting lightening balls from their eyes)
Hello Games recent release was of course hit by a huge (coming from the same 20-30 people, which is quite small really) amount of criticism with various players exclaiming that "they didn't have god like powers", "There was no pot of gold at the end of the rainbow" and "They didn't get to ride a real unicorn" with every purchase of the game. With that started the long campaign of trolling gamers lathering while attempting to get refunds from every orifice imaginable.
This however does bring up the question as to the face(faeces) value of trolling what are they actually attempting to get from it. Hello Games Publisher (Sony) has had a long history of small insurrections caused by the poison few (such as the playstation network hack etc) The attacks aimed at them though can actually go a little bit further than just a bunch of childish millennial's needing to grow up.
There is actually the chance of the trolling as a form of cyber-attack that is aimed at destabilising stock value of companies, undermine economics and could even by operated by foreign countries cyber-divisions as apart of an ongoing cyber-war.
(An old cold war concern was when communism was in it's hayday, infiltrating espionage agents would gain access to anarchist groups to shape and direct their operation for subversion knowing full well that such homegrown groups would be named and shamed for any acts, leaving the provocateur's country of allegiance being devoid of being made responsible.)
While the ring leaders have their agenda, those people that have joined them by brandishing pitchforks are more concerned with the ability to have their cake and eat it by getting "Free stuff". (Cargo Culture)
While some of their arguments about the game not having the content they desired or living up to their expectations is true, the blatant misrepresentation by the key individuals involved in writing the press article seems to be completely ignored while Hello Games, Steam an Sony seem to be taking the brunt of the abuse.
A question can be raised in regards to if parenting now a days isn't going far enough to teach social skills and moral values as peoples children seem to be lost to a hurd of vile degenerates hellbent on destruction, ingratitude and abuse.
