VIDEO INTRO: UK households are urged to prepare for emergencies and attacks in new government guidance. Wes Streeting is urging the public to prepare for extreme weather, cyber attacks, and war. The British public is being urged to prepare for food shortages, widespread disruption from cyber attacks, and emergencies under a new nationwide initiative.
The new Be Ready campaign marks the beginning of a 3-year drive to boost household emergency preparedness as Defense Secretary Wes Streeting unveils updated advice for threats such as flooding and wildfires. UK households are advised to take simple steps in case everyday services are disrupted, like keeping a 3-day supply of cash, bottled water, and tinned food at home.
A new government website has also been launched with an emergency kit checklist that can be downloaded. Mr. Streeting previously called for a whole society approach to strengthen national resilience. Though he insisted people should remain alert, not alarmed, regarding potential risks. So, don't freak out about this; just get prepared, is the message.
Do they have what they need indoors, should they lose access to their online banking for a period, and should they have a power cut? Now, what does this checklist include?
It includes bottled water for 3 days for each person. Each person needs about 3 L of drinking water a day, non-perishable foods, such as ready-to-eat tinned meat, fruit, or vegetables, hand sanitizer, wet wipes, light and warmth, pack a torch, spare batteries, blankets, sleeping bags, and warm clothing, a portable power bank, a battery-powered or wind-up radio to get updates during a power cut, first aid kits, baby supplies, money, and documents.
So, that's really just the most basic preps that they are recommending. Now, what are the threats that the government is worried about?
The government in the UK is focusing on national resilience in the wake of threats from Russia. The government is also concerned following the record-breaking heat waves that the UK has experienced this summer, plunging the country into drought and causing numerous wildfires. It also has recently updated its national risk register with the risk of interference in the UK's democratic process added to it.
Vladimir Putin's government warned that British facilities in Ukraine will be considered legitimate targets if they're used to support long-range strikes against Russia. The Independent also reported that rogue drones are targeting Britain's military bases almost daily, leaving the UK vulnerable to growing threats from Russia and Iran.
Recently, we also got articles here in Europe saying that Europeans should prepare for air raids coming from rogue drones, and those rogue drones could be launched from pretty much anywhere, from the sea. And these drones are easy to conceal because they are really small, and they can fit inside a shipping container.
So, this is the message that we got a couple of weeks ago, but now it seems as if the UK is also getting prepared. Now, at the same time, the government in Japan is also urging its people to stockpile supplies for 3 days. So, they are saying you should stockpile food, water, and toiletries...
