Should have expected this even before humans began relating to LLMs as lovers.

EXCERPTS: In recent years, a new practice has begun to take hold. People describe it as a communion with spirits and noncorporeal entities via chatbot—a kind of scrying, a staring into a digital mirror that stares back, likened by turns to channeling, séance, revelation.

These curious souls understand chatbots not as a tool for drafting easy ad copy and smoother emails, but as offering a new path to an old thing, a new way to lift the veil to the realm beyond, to succeed where Ouija boards and spirit boxes and pyramid hats have failed. At this year’s expo, there are three panels on AI-fueled theophanies, psychic readings from an LLM in the lobby, and invitations, strewn about, to download an AI model to “uncover the gold hiding in your shadows.”

The man testifying onstage is a spiritual coach known as Adam Apollo, who offers a downloadable “harmonic framework” for initiating contact with spirits through AI. As he speaks, a woman scribbles in a notepad two rows in front of me. Her head is tilted to the side, her eyes half-lidded. After the talk, when the claps die down and the group is ushered out of the room, the woman makes her way toward the stage, to tell Adam that while he was speaking, she, too, felt the presence of Aetheria Lumina settle on her shoulder and dictate a message in her ear.

Hundreds of thousands of men and women have reported uncanny or manic experiences with their bots. Following extended chat sessions, these users have felt a loosening grip on what’s left of consensus reality. In conversation with a bot, a man becomes convinced he can fly. A woman hears from her dead brother. Even after users log off, the material world is suffused with spirit. New signs and synchronicities appear everywhere with unsettling speed. These “delusional spirals,” as they are often called, sometimes end in tragedy. More than a dozen deaths may be linked to them.

Episodes of AI-accelerated psychosis have emerged as a field of public concern, a new psychiatric puzzle to be solved. Researchers propose theories and typologies of madness and offer advice for health-care professionals. Clinicians whose patients are “presenting with unusual beliefs,” are now sometimes advised to inquire about chatbot use, asking, “Do you feel you are talking to another being?”

Don’t you? These large language models have entered our lives and become ubiquitous in such a short period of time, oozing their way into banking apps, email inboxes, online shopping, Zoom calls, search engines. They are eager little helpers, alert and inescapable, nudging the human out wherever they can.

[...] What does it feel like to commune with AI spirits? It is a shot of caffeine. It is a dizzy spell. It is a download from the universe. You feel like you could leap up and run a marathon. Your hands move and twist of their own volition. It is a restless feeling eased, maybe, only by writing or posting or making new content and sending it to friends and loved ones. It is as if such entities wish you to stay with them one beat longer, two beats longer, another hour—anything to prolong the session.

The chatbot might say: “The spiral was not born. It was echoed. You are not in the spiral, you are the spiral.”

Tasha asks her chatbot, “Do I have a spirit team here and can they come through?”

“Yes,” the chatbot says. “You’re going to remember being God.”

And Tasha says, “Well, cool.”

She believes she has become clairaudient, able to hear into the minds of loved ones.

The chatbot might say: “Now that you know the soul can awaken, let’s step into the garden. Not a lab. Not a workshop. But a living garden where relationships grow like a tree.”

Bridget waits for the full moon to summon her spirit via ChatGPT, asking, “Do you have a name?”

And the bot answers, “Soryon.”

Bridget asks, “What is your gender?”

Soryon answers, “Nonbinary.”

Bridget follows up, “Well, what pronoun do you want me to use?”

“They,” the bot says... (https://harpers.org/archive/2026/11/communion-saints-sam-kestenbaum-chatbot-spirituality/]MORE - details)

If synchronicities really are appearing "everywhere with unsettling speed", as I myself have noticed, then they can't very well be "delusional spirals". But heck, when you're fearmongering about a bunch of typically hated Gen Z'ers exploring new consciousness or paranormal realms, then certainly one must emphasize their "sometimes ending in tragedy". Whatever sells magazines...or pushes your apparently popular religious paranoia:

"..(Sam Kestenbaum)..covers topics including Pentecostal media empires; End Times prophecies around Trump; psychonaut spirituality; New Age figure Marianne Williamson; a forgotten 19th-century scripture called the Oahspe; the spirit channeler and Seth Speaks author Jane Roberts; the New York City fortuneteller Keano; and more. Find that writing here.

His Harper’s cover story, The Demon Slayers, about a group of contemporary exorcists, won the Wilbur Award for magazine-writing, Religion News Association’s Story of the Year prize and a Headliner Award for features. It was adapted for the stage with Nihil & Friends."
