Darkness is not just a metaphor for our unconscious psyche. It is a literal externalization of it. When we are in darkness, we literally ARE more unconscious and open to the fluid ontology of our own chthonic realms. Just like we only dream internally while being asleep and so unconscious, so do we dream externally when engulfed in the surrounding unconsciousness of the world, opened up to the manifestation of that collective and primeval level of our psyche where the mythical and the archetypal roam with a life of their own. Hence the psychoid instantiation of ghosts and aliens and other mercurial otherworldlings effecting noctilucent catharses in our own deepest levels of being. In the dark our shadows have a chance of coming alive. Nightime becomes the oneiritic subspace where our most feared and storied rapscallions physicalize and play.

Supernatural entities can be tolerated by society as long as they only appear and have influence in the psychological domain, rather than residing in the external environment. Akin to Freddy Krueger. The establishment can regard them as mere thought viruses, only encountering difficulties when multiple people seem to experience Brand-Z agency simultaneously in an inter-coordinated manner. "But all five of us saw Bigfoot resting on the boulder that day."
Yet even then, the congregation mutually feeling the presence of the Holy Spirit that Sunday morning or three drunken and drug-addled teenagers receiving an order from Satan to set fire to the forest... Exemplifies the escape dismissal of how psychological harmony can often find a way. Like performers in a musical orchestra or in a dance arrangement physically achieving and maintaining coherence.

Experiencers often report a strange duplicity in their numinous encounters, the beings sensed as being out there objectively while being part of themselves at the same time. This as well as its occurrence to multiple eyewitnesses, of marks and traces left on the body or environment, and of being caught on camera, is where the phenomenon shows itself to be an essentially de-rationalizing experience--like a Zen koan which awakens the subjects to an epistemic perspective outside of the standard materialist worldview of our times. I see it as a harbinger of a universal evolution of the human--the rising up of new way of being-in-the-world that simultaneously grasps as one the paradoxical unity of inner and outer experience.
"If you devote enough research, time and thought to this riddle, your world changes, first at the edges, then grows from there. The realization does not arrive as one loud thunderclap. The evidence accumulates. An old photograph, a frightened voice, a child’s drawing."---Robert Mark Spearman
