The background to this is that I 'experienced' * nice bread and have been looking for something similar. I went into a local bakery and asked for a small white loaf .. the grotty youth picked one up and asked if I'd like it sliced .. already I'm wondering what he was doing with his hands before he picked my bread up. After slicing it goes in a bag and he takes my money .. with the same hands! If I wanted to spend a few days projectile vomiting I'd eat the loaf .. otherwise not so keen. So.. bakery #2 .. I nearly said "You wouldn't believe what they did in the 'other' shop" .. and (surprise) the nice lady did exactly the same thing .. same hands.
To sterilise the bread I did toast a few slices .. then Mrs C2 came up with the answer .. cooking it (bread and butter pudding) should kill most things .. so that's what she did.
Any rat/mouse nibbled or otherwise contaminated bread can be turned into delicious bead and butter pudding. See Internet for recipes.
