If someone pointed at a tree and asked you what that is, you could certainly explain that it is a tree with such and such qualities and properties. You seem to know that IS a tree, but not literally . The object physically before you afterall is certainly nothing like the word "tree" inside your head.

And the more you try to get at the nature of this thing before you the more you simply speak more words and sentences that are only further isolating you from it inside your head. Words and sentences that are simply categories and generalizations with no specific content.

Where have these sound-induced mental states and images in your head touched the actual thing before you? Nowhere it seems. Is all knowledge then just an endlessly labyrinthine trap of words referring to other words inside our own heads? Like a dictionary made up entirely of words whose definitions are made up of the very words it is also defining?

"The Tao that can be spoken is not the eternal Tao. The name that can be named is not the eternal name."---Lao Tzu
