Meh, many people have never eaten fresh from the garden, seen how their meat is killed, etc.. Just modern sensitivities.

Given how devoid of taste supermarket strawberries and tomatoes are (compared to home grown), it's a wonder bugs would even want to inhabit the fresh produce of industrial farming. The latter develops them for longer shelf-life rather than flavor. It's funny when some customers remark that "these strawberries taste great if you add lots of sugar to them". If they have to do the latter in order to compensate, they're buying ####.

Some frozen fruit/berries and canned tomatoes, OTOH -- when sugar, salt and so forth isn't added -- may be picked and processed when actually ripe, due to less concern about what they look like. Also, no need for a shelf-life enhanced variety in that context.

Going against the grain, though, is the cherry tomatoes sold in stores that do retain the flavor of backyard garden or non-industrial yield.
