For an earlier generation, it would surely be Hank Williams Sr. for Alabama. It's irrelevant whether one likes the music or not, he's akin to the foundation of a building -- the person who invented the telephone or the lightbulb or something -- so much above rests on him. And he only missed the 27 Club by two years.

Yes..I learned that since. I remember a guy I worked with back in 99 saying they were from Portland but I didn't believe him. Portugal The Man is from here too.
