"Graveyards of the Universe" --Massive Dead Galaxies Observed
http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/201...erved.html

EXCERPT: . . . The research team made use of fossil records imprinted by stars in the spectra of distant dead galaxies which give important clues to their age, metal content, and element abundances. Local massive dead galaxies are about 10 billion years old and rich in heavy elements. Also, alpha-elements, which measure the duration of star formation, are more abundant than iron, indicating that these galaxies formed a large amount of stars in a very short period. The team investigated the stellar content of galaxies in the distant universe 4 billion years after the Big Bang, in order to study galaxy evolution much closer to their formation epoch....

Earth-like Alien Planets --"Will Have Very Similar Interiors"
http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/201...s-cfa.html

EXCERPT: Will rocky exoplanets orbiting other stars have the same three layers? New research suggests that the answer is yes - they will have interiors very similar to Earth. "We wanted to see how Earth-like these rocky planets are. It turns out they are very Earth-like," says lead author Li Zeng of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics (CfA)....

Computer model of sun's magnetic fields could prevent disaster
http://www.techtimes.com/articles/131401...saster.htm

EXCERPT: . . . The model itself shows closed magnetic field lines, and open ones which project out into space. The open lines are colored pink or green while bright spots appear when the closed lines run into each other. Studying the solar magnetic fields is important because these magnetic explosions can cause solar flares and solar storms. Within the scientific community, many suggest that solar storms could at some point pose a threat to Earth, not just disrupting space travel, but also disrupting our own magnetic fields, something that could destroy our power grids and leave us without electricity for a matter of months....
