EXCERPTS: Reports of a massive explosion in Washington state sent residents in the Pacific Northwest into a state of confusion Monday morning. The US Geological Survey (USGS) sent out an alert just before 11.30am ET, warning that an explosion with the force of a magnitude 3.0 earthquake has just taken place near the town of Concrete.
USGS quickly retracted the false explosion warning and reclassified the seismic event as a magnitude 2.9 earthquake, less than 70 miles north of Seattle. A magnitude 2.6 earthquake was detected in the same location at 10.06am, but there have not been any reports of damage or injuries following either minor quake.
The second earthquake struck at an extremely shallow depth of less than 2,000 feet beneath the surface, making it more likely to have been felt by people, even when these tremors are small. Reports from residents revealed that the shaking was generally only felt for a few miles from the quakes' epicenters and did not reach Seattle.
As for the momentary false alarm, there have been no reports of an explosion in the area around Concrete Monday morning. Small earthquakes in Washington are fairly common, since the state sits near the Cascadia Subduction Zone (CSZ), a nearly 700-mile-long fault line off the West Coast of North America.
[...] Monday's brief false alarm followed an even larger mishap less than two weeks ago, where seismic warning systems sent out an alert for a massive 5.9 earthquake in Nevada that never took place.
[...] Although Washington state is not as well known for major earthquakes as California, federal officials have been preparing for the possibility of a devastating natural disaster along the CSZ. An April 2025 study found that a colossal earthquake along the CSZ was almost assured to take place by 2100, with a 37 percent chance it'll happen at any point in the next 50 years.
The zone stretches from northern Vancouver Island in Canada to the southern half of the US West Coast, running along the coasts of Washington, Oregon, and California.
If an earthquake between 8.0 and 9.0 in magnitude struck today, scientists warned that a 100-foot mega tsunami could form, wiping out most of the Pacific Northwest, as the coastline would drop by almost eight feet instantaneously.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) estimated that there would be 5,800 deaths from a mega CSZ earthquake alone and another 8,000 due to the mega tsunami it would unleash... (MORE - missing details)
