Should $140K per year be America's poverty line?

No doubt that $140,000 is what it should be for New York City. But this is why even lower tier proles vote the way they do in red states. To avoid needing over four times the income that their counterparts in blue states and blue cities apparently need, for the same level of "getting by". Ruddy Haven: "Keep that tax-crazed dysphoria and expensive bureaucratic micromanagement nightmare constrained to the regional populations that continually vote it into power."

So we'd end up subsidizing large swaths of middle America, just because the cost of living doesn't push the incomes to that level?
Sounds like a scheme to get more people dependent on government, which would then lean more and more socialist/authoritarian.
