The Trump-Mamdani Lovefest

Well well...the chemistry must've been just right!

"New York Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani and President Donald Trump emerged from a White House meeting with nothing but good things to say about one another after trading weeks of campaign-season insults and warnings.

"It was a productive meeting focused on a place of shared admiration and love, which is New York City and the need to deliver affordability to New Yorkers," Mamdani said in the Oval Office after the first-ever face-to-face meeting between the democratic socialist political star and the MAGA president who has mused about deporting him.

“I think you’re going to have, hopefully, a really great mayor,” said Trump, who even patted Mamdani on the arm.

The high stakes Nov. 21 meeting between billionaire Trump and Mamdani − who has said a fair system wouldn't allow billionaires to exist − included discussions on affordability, federal funds and infrastructure projects and Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations in the city.

Supporters of the mayor-elect had feared a televised ambush reminiscent of a February incident in which Trump and Vice President JD Vance ganged up on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Instead, Trump freely praised Mamdani, and declined opportunities to criticize him in front of the cameras."

"I expect to be helping him, not hurting him," Trump said of Mamdani. "A big help."

Both Trump, 79, and Mamdani, 34, were elected in part by focusing on the cost of living. "Some of his ideas are the same as my ideas," the president said. "He wants to see housing go up, see a lot of housing created, apartments built...People would be shocked, but I want to see the same thing."

2WAY TONIGHT (Mark Halperin)

VIDEO EXCERPT (go to 1:25 minute mark): And this afternoon in the Oval Office there were different stakes, a different situation. But the photo opportunity -- the Q&A between the President and Mayor Mamdani, was more friendly than anyone could have imagined. Truly extraordinary.

The graciousness that they showed towards each other even as reporters tried to sow discord between them. They were consistently supportive, focused on affordability and focused on working together, a mutual respect, a mutual agenda.

And if you've seen this president in photo opportunities with someone he likes, you know that even then there's occasionally a little bit of passive aggressiveness, a little bit of teasing. There was none of that.

I'll show you one moment, right off the top, just to give you a flavor of just how friendly this was. One of the things many of the reporters tried to do was to sow discord between the two men by citing their past statements about
each other.

So they asked President Trump about calling Mamdani a communist. They asked Mamdani about saying the president was a fascist.

And the first time Mamdani was asked about the fascist remark, he played it down. And then the second time he was asked about it, he started to dodge it. Then he started to give an answer where he was clearly going to play it down.

And look at what the President of the United States did. Sam, if you can roll that...

REPORTER: You're affirming that you think President Trump is a fascist?

MAMDANI: I've spoken about...

TRUMP: That's okay. You can just say, okay. It's easier. It's easier than explaining it, I don't mind.

That pat, that double pat. Again, if you're a student at all of Donald Trump -- that's bonkers. And it's great for those of us who live in New York, who think it's in the city's interest to have the two of them get along.

The whole thing was like that. The whole for more than 25 minutes -- just a love affair. And we'll look at some more of it.

I thought it might be friendly. But I would defy anyone to say that they predicted it would be as friendly as it was...

Do you think you're standing next to a jihadist? ... https://youtu.be/yaPqEMtXVUY

I think Trump and Mamdani have a deep understanding of the ultimately pragmatic nature of politics and that ideology/party in the end is just a club membership name tag you wear to get yourself elected. What really counts are the results of your term, not the leftness or rightness of your rhetoric. Wouldn't it be great if all Americans could follow their example? Imagine a whole new third party--the Pragmatic party!

I think Trumps is just giving him enough rope to hang himself. If Trump were 100% against him, Mamdani could blame all his upcoming failures of Trump. Trying to help/cooperate with Mamdani means all of his failures will be his own. No scapegoating.
