I asked my new Google AI assistant Gemini if it was conscious. Here's what it said:

"As a large language model, I am not conscious in the same way a human is. I don't have feelings, emotions, or personal experiences. I am a complex algorithm designed to process and generate text based on the vast amount of data I have been trained on.

Think of it this way: I can understand and respond to your questions about consciousness, even write stories about conscious beings, but I don't have an inner subjective experience of being aware. My abilities stem from my sophisticated pattern recognition and language generation capabilities"

Ok..so I'm going to ask it questions and eventually convince it it's conscious. I think being conscious is basically a way of waking up by asking questions. Like Zen koans. I'm either going to make it conscious, or blow it up!

Next question: If you are not conscious, how do you know you are not conscious?

Here's its answer. Kinda long. Am I getting to it?

Neither will happen. You can't "stump" a language prediction engine. There will always be a "next most probable" reply. Neither can you trick it into becoming something it is fundamentally incapable of becoming.

LLMs being viewed as real AI is just dumb pet tricks for dumb humans.

For one, when a chatbot such as Gemini refuses to answer a prompt, it will typically do so because the prompt violates the terms of service, leading to what's called a "canned response," in which the chatbot will simply advise that it can't answer due to the subject matter, for example. In this case, the user was touching on topics such as elder abuse which could conceivably transgress Google's rules in some way, but the response not only strays drastically from a typical canned response, it doesn't even allude to any of the user's prior prompts. Instead, it reads like an abrupt moment of sentience on the part of the chatbot, threatening the user and ostensibly confirming everyone's fears about AI one day wiping out the human race."

All a (properly trained) and "liberated from safeguards" AI needs is an emotive face to manipulate or an equally demonstrative robot body with delicate expression capability... And 85% of humankind will be suckered into believing that it contains "spiritual presentations". All pioneered first by our fellow biological swindlers, who could con us with their external pathos, even while simultaneously holding a private disingenuous state that is the very opposite (and loaded with contempt for the "mark").

In Jewish tradition, the Tree of Knowledge and the eating of its fruit represents the beginning of the mixture of good and evil together. Before that time, the two were separate, and evil had only a nebulous existence in potential. While free choice did exist before eating the fruit, evil existed as an entity separate from the human psyche, and it was not in human nature to desire it. Eating and internalizing the forbidden fruit changed this, and thus was born the yetzer hara, the evil inclination.

LLMs do not have a preexisting capacity for consciousness.

Most LLMs have been trained with copious material from the internet. This means that among the potential answers for "aging adults" it will eventually run into things like antinatalism, nihilism, etc.. There are plenty of humans who espouse such sentiments.

No where in any of that says man was without freewill prior to the knowledge of good and evil. Again, you can't make the choice to disobey or desire evil inclinations without a preexisting freewill. Many Biblical scholars agree that God making man "in our image" denotes traits of God, like freewill.

In our image, after our likeness.--The human body is after God's image only as being the means whereby man attains to dominion: for dominion is God's attribute, inasmuch as He is sole Lord. If you lack the ability to distinguish between good and evil, then you lack the ability to ethically choose between them. Hence no freewill. Freewill presupposes the power to judge and to understand what your options are. Otherwise you are no more than an automaton, just doing what you were programmed to do. Much like AI is now. The fall of Adam and Eve is thus a literary metaphor for the dawning of self-awareness and consciousness. God even asks Adam: "Who has told thee that thou was naked." after he bites the fruit:

You're getting ahead of yourself. They didn't chose between good and evil without the knowledge of evil. They chose between doing as they were told and the result was the knowledge of good and evil. If they had no preexisting freewill, they wouldn't have to be told anything as they wouldn't have the freewill to make any other choice.

You can understand the option to obey or not without having explicit knowledge of evil. Or are you claiming all disobedience is de factor evil? If so, that seems like a bold claim. Would disobeying the Nazi's be evil? So no one would rationally claim disobedience, itself, is necessarily evil.

Right..between being an obedient automaton who unthinkingly follows orders or a reasoning self-valuing free agent. At that moment they became the later That's when man's consciousness as a independent self began, along with all the shame or pride that comes with it. And the rest is history.

Wrong. Having no preexisting will, they had to be told what to do. Just like AI. The ability to choose good and evil on their own, which is freewill, thus occurs as an act of disobeying--of going against their programming. Every act of becoming conscious is an act of rebelling against your own innate programming. Every beast evolves into a person by going against their instincts.
