Parody Alcove: Symbolic capitalists exploit or hijack all narratives to their advantage. So the overarching irony is that some form of discrimination remains an aspect of business, no matter what. When the winds are suitable, an enterprise can opportunistically profit from projecting a virtuous public image of itself; and just as opportunistically drop such "affirmative action" when conditions reverse unfavorably in that respect. Each generation also has to conceal positive discrimination behind a new term or acronym. So DEI is purely a casualty in name only -- quota regimes will rise from the ashes yet again under a different title, especially when swinging that way is rewarding or profitable once more for "spineless corporations".

INTRO: On Monday, CBS settled a lawsuit with Seal Team script coordinator, Brian Beneker, who claimed that the company’s DEI policies prevented him from being hired as a writer on the show.
In the lawsuit filed in February 2024, he alleged that he wasn’t promoted to the writer’s room “due to his race, sex, and heterosexuality.” He asked for $500,000 in lost wages and for Paramount+ to offer him a job as a producer on the show— despite the streamer already announcing that the show was coming to an end.
The final settlement is private and reportedly does not include any changes to their diversity polices. Deadline speculates that the payout for the former employee “was not particularly large.”
Earlier this year, Paramount rolled back on DEI initiatives to comply with Trump’s mandates and to seek FCC approval for their merger with Skydance. They claimed they will no “longer set or use aspirational numerical goals related to the race, ethnicity, sex or gender of hires”; Disney made similar changes in February...

CBS won't poke the bear, settles discrimination lawsuit (excerpt): Almost a year ago, the company defended its hiring practices under the auspices of the First Amendment. [...] But the political landscape looked a lot different when CBS promoted that defense in 2024.
Now, studios are dropping diversity, equity, and inclusion goals from their missions [...] FCC Chair Brendan Carr recently suggested the government might block mergers if companies don’t fall in line on the issue [...] Arguing in favor of DEI hiring policies in a lawsuit backed by Trump advisor Stephen Miller might put Paramount in the crosshairs. Seeing that through would require serious spine, which CBS doesn’t have because corporations aren’t people...
