Again, this falls out of the de-globalization process that is going on. The Cold War is long over, and it's sliding toward a country no longer getting automatic protection from the US purely for being an ally. REFERENCE: Assassins and war are a symptom of the collapse of globalism
And no different from Trump's past rebukes directed at NATO countries. It also arguably pleases China and Russia to hear such tidbits.
Which in turn hints at how he likes to butter up war-threat countries beforehand, by indicating he's at least token-receptive to acknowledging their concerns or POVs. Rather than preaching social justice and hellfire at them, as Woke administrations tend to do. In the old days of pragmatism, US foreign policy often coddled key tyrants with either aid or superfluous kisses to keep the peace and encourage cooperation.

VIDEO INTRO: Today's episode will be heavily focused on developments in US/China relations. Yesterday US media outlet Bloomberg published an interview they did with former US president Donald Trump a couple of weeks ago. His comments on Taiwan have caused a bit of a stir with analysts and markets.
Trump reportedly told the outlet: "Taiwan should pay us for defense. Taiwan doesn't give us anything. They took all of our chip business, they are immensely wealthy. I don't think we're any different from an insurance policy. Why are we doing this?"
David Sacks, a fellow for Asian studies at the Council on Foreign Relations, expressed on the comments: "If I was in Taiwan I would take this statement seriously because it is not an isolated remark. There is a pattern now."
Other analysts agree: "The absence of any mention of Taiwan in the RNC platform likely means Taiwan's DC lobbyists are going to need to find new people to spend even more money on. It is also a reminder that we need to get ready for a more chaotic approach to foreign policy than we saw in his first term. But do his comments mean the US would abandon Taiwan? I would not bet on it."
State media was quick to report on the comments: "The authorities of Taiwan should be trembling now...."
