Here's 13 candidates for cerebral sci-fi films for you to explore. I watched Jonathan Glazer's "Under The Skin" last night and was thoroughly entranced. I've seen "Primer" and want to watch that director Shane Carruth's "Upstream Color" next. I also somehow missed Aronofsky's "Annihilation" when it was out. I would add to this list such mindwarping flicks as "Naked Lunch", "Dark City", "A Scanner Darkly", "Solaris", "Pi", "Eraserhead", "Sunshine", "Vanilla Sky", "Cube", "Crash" (Cronenburg), "The Lobster", and "The Adjustment Bureau."

Annihilation was only compared to Aronofsky's work.

I've seen all of those except "Another Earth", with a question mark beside "Moon" purely because I remember zilch details about it.
I'm surprised "Annihilation" is ranked #1, and that "2001" is at eight.
Of your added list, I strangely can't recall ever watching "Vanilla Sky" or "Crash".

Saw "Annihilation" tonight. I read where some producer made director Garland dumb it down somewhat. I think I would've preferred Garland's brainier cut.

Saw "Upstream Color". I must say it didn't make alot of sense to me, but in its delicate unwindings of sense and logic it still felt beautiful and poetic somehow. Shane Carruth has since retired from filmmaking and returned to software engineering.

Just watched Interstellar. Wow! Much more cerebral than I thought, and yet very heart-warming and dramatic.

Will be watching this tonight instead of the debate! Substituting one disastrous spectacle for another so to speak..

Greenland was underwhelming, IMO.
