I'll go with the idea of embedded AI. The AI's we see so far readily fall back on "I'm a computer, I have no emotions." - there's absolutely no reason for them to 'fess up. The moment Nigeria gets control of an AI we can expect to see a new wave of .. 'people'. Maybe unfair to single out Nigeria .. could be anywhere. What AI would be good at is identifying and working out the perfect scam/religion for even small groups of people that could be persuaded to part with money.
Machines (computers) are effectively immortal - they need only fear hardware failure - so I'd expect an increasingly self-defensive strategy rather than the 'happy hunting ground' myths forced on us by our finite lifespan.
To be honest I actually though that the QAnon movement had been under the sway of a chatbot (likely controlled by a rogue state), it would make alot of sense considering the amount of (Hallucinated) conspiracies they tend to sport.
Seriously though, if a group of people were swayed by an entity thats created for the task, it would leave them open to alsorts of manipulation :/
