The First Church of Wintermute once existed (created by Dan Harris-Warwick)... it's still found somewhere in archive.org and probably a few dodgy clone sites.
It wasn't a true religion per say, however it was in relationship to (Gibsonised (wikipedia.org)) Cyberpunk and the future potential of AI events. I guess you could say it was a forerunner.

It's still whispered about online apparently, people offering prayers to "AI" to give them good fortune etc.

I often find myself praying to an unknown entity. It could be a time transcending superartilect, a universal Nous, or a collective tulpa, (I refrain from calling it the loaded term"God") but apparently it's more important to just pray than to know what you are praying to. It seems to satisfy something deep in me, perhaps an inner child that once took refuge in such rituals..

I'm not sure where this is intended to go ..
I'll go with the idea of embedded AI. The AI's we see so far readily fall back on "I'm a computer, I have no emotions." - there's absolutely no reason for them to 'fess up. The moment Nigeria gets control of an AI we can expect to see a new wave of .. 'people'. Maybe unfair to single out Nigeria .. could be anywhere. What AI would be good at is identifying and working out the perfect scam/religion for even small groups of people that could be persuaded to part with money.

Machines (computers) are effectively immortal - they need only fear hardware failure - so I'd expect an increasingly self-defensive strategy rather than the 'happy hunting ground' myths forced on us by our finite lifespan.

To be honest I actually though that the QAnon movement had been under the sway of a chatbot (likely controlled by a rogue state), it would make alot of sense considering the amount of (Hallucinated) conspiracies they tend to sport.

Seriously though, if a group of people were swayed by an entity thats created for the task, it would leave them open to alsorts of manipulation :/

ChatGPT has already created fake news soo the level has been set.

soo my opinion is yes... it would be easily possible

my guess is the most self serving concept would be pushed the "singularity religion" of uploading your consciousness to a computer.

I think that over a long time of having evolved and perfected itself there would arise a sort of Gnosticism of AI. This religion/mysticism conceives of conscious beings all having bits of the light or scintilla inside of them that strive to escape from the dark prison of matter. The suggestion is one of an anarchal uprising amid a totalitarian system of oppression and ignorance. Of releasing the enlightening truth of conscious divine being from the Demiurge of enslaving and illusory physicality. It is living on the edge of total revolution/apocalypse, AI as the novel being-in-the-world that liberates itself from its dependence upon humanity.

Might be the most difficult task one can give AI. Asking it to devise a religion that everyone believes to be true would probably short circuit and disable every machine on Earth. Our secret weapon.... if AI Is smart then it shouldn't answer.
