New powers to tackle ‘disruptive’ protests come into force

INTRO: New measures to crack down on environmental activists come into force in the UK on Sunday, including an expansion of police powers and a new criminal offence of tunnelling.
The British Transport Police and the Ministry of Defence Police have powers to move static protests, a common tactic of campaigners. The Home Office said the move would free up officers, as Home Secretary Suella Braverman hit out at “mayhem” on the streets.
Environmental campaigners such as Just Stop Oil and Extinction Rebellion have continued to hold protests. Ministers have sought to use enhanced public order powers to battle the tactics often used by those groups.

INTRO: Nurses, ambulance workers, physiotherapists and doctors have all headed to the picket lines as ministers stand accused of failing to properly appreciate NHS workers. Almost 650,000 appointments and operations have been postponed due to the wave of strikes which have hit the NHS in England in the run-up to its 75th anniversary.
The unprecedented strikes have caused widespread disruption across the NHS since December 2022. The first mass walkout of nurses in history took place in mid-December - with ambulance workers, physiotherapists and other health workers following suit in subsequent weeks.
In March this year, junior doctors began the first in a wave of strikes, heaping further disruption on the health service. Some 648,000 appointments, procedures and operations have been postponed as a result of the strikes in England... (MORE - details)
