It happened at Devils Slide, along the old Highway 1 coastal road about 10 miles south of San Francisco.
Driver was a physician from Southern California and the California Highway Patrol believe he drove the car off the 300 foot cliff intentionally (and that self-driving feature played no role). The car had four people in it, the man, his wife, and their two children.
The car flipped several times on the way down, but landed rightside up in the rocks at the edge of the ocean. First responders assumed that the occupants must be dead, but all four were found to be alive. The two children reportedly were discovered to be uninjured, the two adults had more serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Broken bones and orthopaedic joint injuries, I think.
Quote:The driver has reportedly been arrested for attempted murder and child abuse. He will be booked into jail when the hospital releases him.
They should throw the book at him. Nothing more despicable than a murder suicide. Except for maybe a failed murder suicide. It's such a chickenshit thing to do.

I bet there's a Tesla advertising agency itching to use this incident as a promotion of how safe the vehicles are, but they can't because of the horrendous nature of it. "How protected are you in a Tesla car? Even in this deliberate drop from a 300-foot cliff, a madman's evil agenda was thwarted by Tesla engineering design."

One of the many unusual features of Tesla is that they don't advertise. You see ads for all the other automobile makes, but never Tesla. It's all word of mouth.
Another unusual feature is that there are no Tesla dealers. Customers order cars direct from the factory. You can choose the options you want, paint color, whether it has FSD and all that, and get a car manufactured to your specifications. Then the car is delivered to a local spot where you can pick it up (or in some cases delivered direct to your home). There's a large parking lot near my home that's always filled with shiny new Teslas for local customers to pick up.
And it's true that the passenger compartment in a Tesla is very robust, built like a tank. They always perform well in those safety crash-tests. The front and rear where the engine goes in conventional cars are designed to crush and absorb impacts.
But driving off a 300 foot cliff is a little extreme, I bet the engineers never factored that possibility into their calculations. This family is very lucky and very unlucky, all at once. Certainly shows the value of wearing your seat-belt!

They never factored in a wife telling her psycho husband while in the car that she wants a divorce, is leaving and taking the kids with her.
I could have sworn when I was driving thru Toronto on weekend that from the highway I saw a giant Tesla ‘T’ at a dealership along a road adjacent to highway. To be honest I have not seen a Tesla car lot anywhere.

My guess is that it was a Tesla charging location. There are lots of those around with the 'T' logo. There are also service locations scattered around.

Tesla does have showrooms, where they do have some cars on-hand...mostly for show. Since most are sold to customer spec, most people won't be buying one off the lot.
