wake up call about the electric heaters

so glad i live in a temperate climate.

reminds me of when i was living in a house with rising damp(& mold) in all the walls and rotten floor boards with holes in them.

landlord was an elderly guy who liked to let himself in to read the meter & collect the weekly rent.
disconcerting when your living by yourself & hear someone opening your back door while your laying in bed freezing trying not to breath the mold.

good point about air filters because in a very cold climate with no electricity and no gas people are going to be burning anything to stay alive.
suburbs will have bad smoke pollution & low lying areas will have all the smoke settling choking them.

I like her American friend whose videos she recommends, "Get off your butt, you little maggot!" He sounds like a Marine drill instructor. (That's probably how Europeans imagine the typical middle American in Texas or wherever. I do kind of like the stereotype though.) A big difference between him and the European preppers is that he's thinking about home defense and is probably armed with a firearm. (It's an American thing.)

Lilly's probably a bit more apocalyptic than she needs to be. I don't really anticipate Europe going dark for a long time. It's more likely that they will enact rolling blackouts so that they can spread limited electrical generating capacity around, by only have to energize half the grid or 1/3 or something. So she's likely to get maybe 8 hours of electricity a day or something like that.

And I didn't like hearing that Austrian supermarket chain saying that they won't try to stop looters. That's basically an invitation to loot. (Why pay for stuff when you can just take it with no downside?) And it won't just be locals trying to survive, it will be criminal gangs cleaning out the shelves so that they can resell stuff to desperate people and make a fortune.

I do fully agree with Lilly that people should think about stocking up on non-perishable food in their pantrys.

Certainly in the UK (and possibly Austria) the vast majority of supermarket staff are just shelf stackers and till operators - they aren't armed, have no training in self defence and play no part in security beyond being asked to report anything they regard as 'suspicious'.  The safety of employees takes priority over all else - if an employee chose to 'be a hero' that would absolutely not be in keeping with any UK company written policy.

I'm guessing the US supermarket staff will all have (concealed?) firearms and an armed militia ready for a shoot out in the beans department but we (in the UK) just don't do things like that.

we have enough food for a couple of months

but we don't have electricity back up

having a generator to power your freezer & fridge seems to be a basic bottom rung to massively extend your survival time frame in my opinion.

salted dried meat seems like it would be a great idea
