Why some white evangelicals are cheerleading Russia

INTRO: While the world looks on in horror as Russia's invasion of Ukraine unfolds, one group has been praising Russian President Vladimir Putin. It turns out Putin has a fan base in America’s right-leaning evangelical politicians and pundits.

Putin has a fan base in America’s right-leaning evangelical politicians and pundits.

At this year’s Conservative Political Action Conference, which wrapped up over the weekend, Lauren Witzke, a GOP candidate for the Senate in Delaware, said: “Here’s the deal. Russia is a Christian nationalist nation. They’re actually Russian Orthodox. ... I identify more with Putin’s Christian values than I do with Joe Biden.”

This isn’t an uncommon stance among some Republicans and white American evangelicals today, who have previously admired Putin because of the alignment of their beliefs with his about homosexuality, authoritarianism and fealty to former President Donald Trump. Many believe Putin’s nationalism, coupled with their Christian belief, is the way America should be.

A few months ago, it’s likely that not much attention would have been paid to a statement like Witzke’s, nor would her support for Putin be so closely connected to her support for Trump. But in light of Russia's current actions, more pro-Putin American evangelicals are coming into sharp focus. Televangelist Pat Robertson proclaimed that Putin is “being compelled by God” to invade Ukraine — his take on Putin’s motivations is questionable at best, but his support for Putin as part of a divine plan is notable.

As things escalate in Ukraine, evangelicals and Republicans alike are faced with a hard choice: How do they support the authoritarian policies of Putin while Ukraine and its evangelical population face the horrors of war? (MORE - details)

I have no liking for the Evangelical Christian Zionists (yes - Zionism is very much a part of the evangelical right wing!). Sorry about that Z bit - but you Lefties need to acknowledge the link!
However. To add an obviously PC heretical consideration to an otherwise standard Left = rainbow coalition Goodness vs Right = 'white male supremacist' Awfulness theme, here's a *tentative* bucket-of-cold-water dumped on the former camp:
Rainbow coalition? That, by all leftist MSM accounts, includes acceptance of basic religious and cultural traditions of Islamic minorities (as immigrants in so-called White Western countries).
OK, accept - there is a carefully avoided juggling act going on here. As in....

1: On the one hand, championing the rights of female Muslims to wear the veil/burka publicly. Opposing that would amount to religious discrimination and particularly, Western white male gender bias.
2: On the other hand, 1: actually is an endorsement of Islamic Law that unequivocally demands the subjugation of females to male domination, e.g. modesty rules DEMANDING the wearing of veils/burkas in public. NOT AN OPTION IN ISLAM! Hence 1: in actuality is endorsing a particularly oppressive medieval religious form of 'male chauvinism'. Oh dear, what a quandary!

One could go on and on. But that single example is enough to highlight the double standards uncontested juggling act that leftist MSM (and e.g. forum mods) just gets away with all the time.

PS - Sure there are examples of Muslim media women spokespersons who don't wear veils etc. Is this the true face of a modernized Islam - or more likely a tolerated interim strategy accepted for the medium term? Until the exponential birth rate disparity inevitably leads to a (planned) Islamic future majority - whence Islamic Law will be enforced?

Don't feel obliged to answer honestly. Self incrimination is not a pleasant thing!

Hmm....no takers so far. Good. Breathing space to expand and qualify re last post. One counterargument could have been that the status/dress codes for women vary widely between various Islamic societies. Which is true, but that merely indicates the relative dominance of secular aspects vs fundamental religious observances. Fact is, the supposed final authority, the Quran, is clear:

It's the hypocritical stance of MSM and politicians in Western host nations that so rankles. Born of short term opportunism in the case of vote-seeking politicians.
And a stupid Marxified thinking by MSM types who imagine that (inherently contradictory) kid gloves dealing with sensitive religious views will somehow lead to a 'Westernizing' of Muslims longer term.

Another point of hypocrisy that clean escapes scrutiny from within the dominant Left/MSM 'Western' paradigm: All that arm-in-arm solidarity with Islamic (for now) minorities rights to free expression of their religious customs and beliefs, has to those switched on, an obvious and fundamental inherent contradiction.
Namely - wherever Islamic law governs, there is a total intolerance for LGBTQ+ permissive attitudes.
Said attitudes enshrined - beginning in recent decades - as a fundamental tenet of new-look, post-traditional-Christian, Western liberal democracies.
Is this further aspect of the overall absurd juggling act, anything but added fuel to a surefire recipe for an upcoming Clash of Civilizations conflagration? Quo Bono?
