INTRO: Drivers who travel with their dog in the car face fines of up to £5,000 for breaching the Highway Code. The Highway Code contains advice and rules for people on Britain’s roads. The code was updated last month to introduce a risk-based hierarchy of road users. But a rule pet owners should be aware of relates to having four-legged passengers in the car. The rule states that pets should be “suitably restrained” when travelling in the car to keep them safe if drivers are forced to stop quickly... (MORE - details)

Not a dog guy but when I see people driving along with the K9 on their lap I wonder just what's going on inside the owner's head. Anyways, in Ontario it's only $110 fine for driving with dog on lap. What happens to the mutt if you hit something with dog on your lap and air bag deploys? Bed of a pick up truck seems like a good spot for Rover, but I imagine that's probably not recommended also. Do animal cruelty laws come into play in some cases as well, IOW no restraint could mean injured pooch.
