Probably everyone should maintain a journal -- but I don't even do that. Oops, black mold exposure emulating Alzheimer's time displacements again. This is the 21st century. What blogs or vlogs or Twitter are for, I guess.

EDIT (added): No will to carry through. Pretty sure I would have been a hack writer, at best. Lacked the ability to do anything innovative, or critically arousing. Didn't even have a resolute desire to court/exploit popular tastes.

I can understand storytellers, versifiers, and artists churning out mediocrity to put food on the table (especially back in the old days); but I don't really need the extra income. Would be a piffling amount, anyway, for all the time spent. [Expected mailbox contents: publisher's rejection, magazine editor's rejection, studio teleplay rejection... etc. "Oh, after 15 months of trying, Varmint Hills Home Cooking Gazette accepted a recipe. Hallelujah!" Big Grin]

Why do we tell stories?: A study has found the first real-world evidence that human beings evolved into storytellers because stories gave us an evolutionary edge. [...] why do we spend hours listening to and telling stories, often of exploits that never even happened? ... Moralising gods and organised religion may perform a similar function in post-agricultural populations by organising behaviour and promoting cooperation. However, these are often absent in hunter-gatherer societies, despite these groups being highly cooperative. We therefore proposed that hunter-gatherer storytelling may perform a comparable function to moralising gods in such societies.

Early humans could have been the first organisms to conceive their grueling hardships and cycles as pointless, too (i.e., that overriding programming to robotically survive) if not for inventive imagination applying to more than just hand tools.

A repeating 3-6-9 syllable pattern.

Storytellers

At moonrise,
When the living relax
From the terrors of their enterprise...
Tribal alchemists wax
About hope
Through eidolons that cope
With ills, burdens, warfare, loss, and ache.
Transmuting dung to cake.

Through that lens
The shack becomes palace,
Adversity and sacrifice: friends.
Droughts, floods seem less callous.
Death affords
Dread and divine rewards.
Their laughs ebb a world's impassive theme;
Jest pecks at its regime.

Wily prose
Is the New Primate's aid
For enduring what it alone knows.
Viewed not by eye, but weighed
By ideas --
Mindless Nature, she is
Changed by ornate and useful falsehood,
Imbued with purpose and good.

Essence of experimental is that failure is a valid option.
You opened the door.
I think something came in through the door when you opened it.
There's something in your hair.
Just look in a mirror.
Please just do it, I don't want to touch it.

One reason for not submitting things items such as this to the Poetry thread is because this place can serve as a testing ground for multiple revisions until a desired result is achieved. A sort of workshop, perhaps. Due to whatever cause -- my errors, mishaps and slipshod decisions don't fully register, sometimes, until after posted. Thus, here I am already changing the one posted earlier. This is the version 2.0 that made it to animated gif form.

The Story Tellers (version 2.0)

At moonrise,
When the living relax
From the terrors of their enterprise...
Tribal alchemists wax
About hope;
Chanting potions that cope
With ills, burdens, warfare, loss, and ache;
Transmuting dung to cake.

Through that lens:
Squalor highlights splendor,
Hunger is a slope to grain filled bins.
Death becomes the vendor
Of diverse
Couplings with the Divine.
Misfortunes bare meaning and purpose,
Serving a grand design.

Wily prose
Is the New Primate's aid
For enduring what it alone knows.
Parsed not by eye, but weighed
By ideas --
Mindless Nature, she is
Charmed by the biped's useful fictions;
Sown with aims, volition.

Thanks, SS. The repeating 3-6-9-6-3-6-9-6... pattern gave me fits, trying to fit acceptable expressions in it.

Forgot that the reason I capitalized "new primate's" in the first version was to prevent the adjective from being misconstrued as applying to "aid" rather than the simian (human). So changed that back a bit ago, both here and in the animated avatar.
