I thought it was interesting, too. I wouldn't go as far as to say that the feelings are an ''altered state of reality'' or something...but, more along the lines of yearning to experience being there, if that makes sense.

wistful - having or showing a feeling of vague or regretful longing.

Hmm, yea maybe. That feeling of wishing you had done something differently coming through when you see photos of say your own ancestors. (?) It’s a feeling that is hard to pinpoint - but, I think “wistful” fits.

Then there is something known as “restorative nostalgia,” when you’re longing to rebuild the past or bring it back to life. Sometimes shopping in a consignment or antique store can conjure up those feelings or even the familiar smells during the holidays that take us back to childhood.
