Eid-al-Adha

There’s been violent protests all week. Tomorrow is Eid-al-Adha. I’m worried that it’s going to promote action rather than restraint. Does anyone know if there’s more violence during this holiday?

Depends on where, now doesn't it? Some Muslim areas are not as radicalized or unstable or don't have nearby targets.

Usually that's the essence of it -- any unrest or violence already in progress for awhile just happens to coincide with the observance and celebrations, without necessarily any increase happening because of the latter. The interpreted "spike" below in Afghanistan might as much be Kabul just receiving the spotlight because it's Kabul. Yesterday or a couple of days earlier some other location may have gotten a spat of firepower instead, but less noticed.

He was supposed to be returning to the states today, but his assignment was extended because his replacement was granted leave.  His grandmother passed away and they’re shorthanded.  The conditions are horrible and the elections are causing a big uproar.  I looked at some photos of the riots.  They’re massive and extremely violent.  They have to go out tomorrow.  He said, "Don’t worry, mom, I’ll be with the bad asses of the bad asses," but there’s not very many of them.

Maybe I'm just getting a little more anxious from being trapped in the house from all the smoke.  Every morning the sun is blood red.  I dream of them being little again.  I can remember when I could wrap them up and pack their strollers with all the necessities. Safe and sound.  Man oh man, those were the days!

From what I can tell it's like a Muslim Christmas. Most people will be keeping with their traditions and have the whole notion of "goodwill". It's just the extremists with the twisted version of the religion that tend to cause problems (of which are a minority).

You can look historically to find that there have been attacks conducted in past years around the world in conjunction with the holiday. What might be of use is to check out the usembassy.gov website for the given area that you are concerned with, although you probably shouldn't expect much information there since the embassies are shut for the full week during the holiday period in those relevant locations. (This as much to respect their hosts as well as protect the staff stationed there.)

Yah, just no avoiding some degree of the nerves being frayed when an offspring is away like that and the unexpected pops up at a time when some respite was anticipated.

At least this shouldn't be like the old days, when the descriptions they sent back in letters to home would ardently try to conceal the full extent of how harsh things really were to shield wives, mothers, sisters, and other family members from worry. Protecting family from emotional distress is an instinctive, timeless approach that's much more difficult to accomplish in an era of rapid travel, instant forms of communication, military leave, and where women are less treated as if psychologically fragile individuals or quasi-children. From the standpoint that when direness IS downplayed, it more reliably is reflecting confidence about a situation rather than trying to hide or mitigate the uncertainties / bleakness of it.

Yeah, you’re right, C C.  I wouldn’t want him to have to sugarcoat it for me. I want to be there for him. I don’t want him to have to comfort and reassure me. It’s tough, though, and I do slip up occasionally.
