Cockpit's-eye View of Aer Lingus Airbus Departing San Francisco for Dublin

SFO is a tremendously busy airport 24-7. Hundreds of planes arriving and departing with the control tower trying to herd all the cats well enough that they don't collide with each other. There are multiple runways constantly in use, taxiways that cross the busy runways and all kind of complexity. (Everything is actually very tightly choreographed.) It's probably a lot less confusing once you get used to it. Most of the cockpit audio is the tower talking to other planes but you have to pay attention to it to maintain situational awareness about who is where doing what. I believe that this particular airliner is the one referred to in the audio as "Shamrock".

I'm very familiar with the neighborhoods that the departing plane flies over. My father was a long-time aviation guy who after leaving the Air Force worked as an engineer for United's huge maintainance facility there. As a child I used to live near the airport and since departing planes roared over my head constantly I was a plane spotter for as long as I can remember.

Remember back in early 80’s my brother and I would go over to Vancouver International and watch planes land. You could park the car, get out and walk over and sit in front of the fence that prevented people from entering the one end of a runway. We would sit there and the planes would go right over our heads just prior to touching down. You could see every rivet and the noise of whining engines was incredible. One day we were in our usual spot and lots of others had gathered to watch but most were off to the side. It was very windy and there was one 747 approaching us. It was obvious the pilots were having a hard time keeping it level. It was adjusting all the time as it got closer and for the first time we got real nervous about being where we were. We started running as the jet got real close and I still remember people screaming all around us seconds before it made it to the ground. Apparently we didn’t see one of the last wind gusts tilt the plane so much that people thought it was going to crash. Somehow pilots corrected in last seconds. That was last time we ever went to that spot. So when you speak of views I wonder if those pilots saw us get up and run like our lives depended on it. Too close for comfort.
