Cleveland Browns pull-off surprising upset over Steelers, end long drought

First time since 1969 that an NFL team led a playoff game by 28+ at the end of the first quarter, and it was the unlikely Cleveland Browns that did it. They hadn't experienced a post-season in 18 years and had not won a playoff game in 25 years. Also, their first win in Pittsburg since 2003.

Several coaches and players out with COVID-19, including the head coach. Very little or no practice over the week. Lost starting offensive lineman throughout the game and replaced them with recent acquisitions who had never even practiced with the Browns before, much less played in a game. Still hung on to win 48-37.

Chubb ran all over the field. Mayfield avoided losing the game via throwing the ball quickly before the #1 pass-rush could get to him. (Pittsburg defense thrives enthusiasm-wise on sacks and disrupting the quarterback, which were denied them.)

Browns play in Kansas City next week, where they have utterly zero chance of winning. Barring Patrick Mahomes and three-quarters of the team getting knocked-out by COVID.

Watched that game with friends tonight. I'd say they need a new coaching staff, to be honest. I've been a fan of the Steelers for about ten years, and they seem to lack good leadership, and heart. Tomlin is a good man, but just doesn't seem to have the team under control. You can do a lot with passion and heart...

Sad to see Ben R. crying at the end...might be his last season. Congrats to any Browns fans here!

Being 10 mins from Buffalo this part of Canada is Bills country. Steeler fans have not suffered anything near what Bills fans have endured the last 25 years. Tomlin could get a head coach job anywhere, he ‘s one of the best but this year it seemed his team got old as season wore on and couldn’t get to the finish line.

Canadian season ticket holders were taking helicopters to game. I saw 5 choppers overhead going towards Buffalo day of game. We can fly to US with a negative COVID test but not drive over, what I’ve heard anyway

I watched the Browns pull off their miracle last night too. They actually looked good out there and pretty much dominated the Steelers. (Ben's interceptions didn't hurt the Browns' cause.) The Browns' defense was stout, Baker Mayfield looked like a rising star (he is) and I was very pleased with the outcome.

(I like the Steelers too, but it was a cheer-for-the-underdog thing.)

If their next game against the defending Superbowl champion Chiefs looks impossible to win, that's exactly how the Browns (the Browns!!) seemingly like it.

Browns in the playoffs and rolling! (A few years ago, who would have ever thunk it?)

I was very pleased to see the Bills win their game against Indy. (I have family ties to Indiana, but I was still cheering for Buffalo.) It's about time that somebody rises up and replaces the Patriots atop the AFC east. My love in college football is the Mountain West conference, and I'm very happy to see Wyoming's Josh Allen rise to stardom. And both Buffalo and the Bills need to have a few wins to brag about.

Well, the long drought is over. It looks like the Buffalo Bills (!!!) will be in the AFC Championship Game. They have well and truly taken the Patriots position in the AFC East.

Frankly, while I wanted the Bills to win, I thought that Baltimore was going to give them lots of trouble. Baltimore has that quarterback Lamar Jackson that all the TV announcers proclaim to be the best player in pro-football, blah, blah, blah. But Buffalo led throughout the game and never looked back. Josh Allen looked good again, finding his receivers and not making stupid mistakes. The real heroes of the game were the Buffalo defense which never let Baltimore break loose any big plays.

Go Bills! Every game is different. The Bills defence is usually overshadowed by their offence. I think the Bills have a really good coaching staff who know how to analyze the other team and that determines the type of game they want to play.

Unless you live here at the eastern end of Lake Erie you have no idea how hard the wind was blowing during the game. I could hear loud gusts while I had the game on TV. When I looked outside my trees were being bent over significantly. Baltimore’s kicker couldn’t figure it out, any deep throw would either sail or go sideways and the Raven’s centre had trouble with his snaps. The Bills stayed with the passing game, might as well do what you do best.

Allen didn’t call his own number much at all. Jackson was looking to run but the Bills were spying on him so he didn’t get away. Ravens actually recovered all three of their fumbles so lucky there. Lamar getting hurt on the last bad snap. The interception for touchdown was obviously the big play of game.

Do you think running quarterbacks like Jackson have a long shelf life in NFL? Such a high risk of being hurt. Last night I thought Allen finally realized he’s more important staying in the pocket.

If Patrick Mahomes was out due to a concussion next week, the Bills would have more than just a chance with KC. But early signs are that he'll be okay. Too bad for the Nickel City dream trip.

It'll be interesting to see what develops. He's not the biggest QB and he got tossed around easily on that play. He hurt his foot earlier too. KC fortunate his substitute and rest of team picked him up. Can one be 100% recovered from a concussion in one week?

Interesting that of the 4 starting QB's left 3 of them are this year's MVP candidates (Rogers, Mahomes, Allen) and the other is a past MVP and future Hall of Famer (Brady).
