Trump campaign says six staffers helping set up for Tulsa rally have tested positive for coronavirus .... Metal barriers, Trump gear: Crowd readies for Tulsa rally .... Trump crowd grows, clashes with protesters ahead of rally .... Tulsa, Okla., prepares for Trump visit with health precautions, closures
On its own, Tulsa supposedly handled the Terence Crutcher shooting fairly well a few years ago. There were protests, but they were peaceful compared to the hybrid demonstration-riots that transpire in other cities. Government, police department, and applicable communities apparently all managed things in a disciplined and responsible fashion.
But this rally is drawing the unhinged and quarrelsome elements from elsewhere into the city, significantly removing control of the situation from its own hands. That includes the POTUS who is renown for acting like he has the temperament, social skills, and administrative expertise of a 12-year-old; the violence-craving journalists stoking the fires and hoping to see something happen; and a mixture of ideological groups that are bitter enemies.
The odds don't seem in its favor, so if Tulsa handles and survives this in a boring manner (squeak rather than a bang), then it should trigger embarrassment in terms of the incompetency that larger metropolitan areas have exhibited. (Should, but won't.)
Toss in evaluation of the aftermath in terms of spread of COVID-19 sickness: Outside the rally site on Friday, Pamela Drake, an older African American woman, wore a red “Make America Great Again” cap and carried a small American flag as she walked in sprinkling rain to claim a place in line for the Trump rally. She and her friend, Kathy Minartz, said they had no fear of catching the coronavirus or of violent protests. “When you have the Lord in your life, you’re protected,” Minartz said.
Outside Trump's Tulsa rally site, few face masks and no social distancing: Jill and Trish, two childhood friends who asked not to be identified by their last names, said they had always talked about meeting up at a Trump rally and finally decided to do so due to what they believed to be a disparity in reporting on the recent Black Lives Matter protests compared to Trump's announcement that he would hold a campaign rally.
"We didn’t hear anything about the coronavirus for two weeks while the looting and protesting was going on and none of them were wearing masks," said Trish, who traveled into town from Springfield, Illinois. "And now that Trump is holding a rally it's all we hear. The hypocrisy is unbelievable."
Jill and Trish said they were not worried about catching the virus and would not wear masks inside. The two women said they regularly avoid going to grocery stores or other public places back home that require a mask.
