The Zaragoza Goblin

Here's is a well-documented case of a poltergeist haunting from Zaragoza Spain in November of 1934. Intriguing is the fact that all it consisted of was a voice coming from inside a wall. Enjoy!

Funny how often a tween/teenage girl or young woman seems to be the one that the blame gets pinned-on. Either as the person committing the chicanery or who the "spirit" is fixated with (if choosing to believe the latter). Ventriloquists can't really "throw their voices" and unconscious ventriloquism is completely ridiculous. The latter just a kind of unspoken admission by authorities that they'll never get their "suspect" to confess to deliberately doing _X_. Due to insufficient, detailed evidence with regard to the selected scapegoat slash explanation they needed for finally, publicly closing a puzzling, embarrassing case.

Quote:It was on that date that the family first began hearing strange screams, laughter, and voices that seemed to come from the walls of their kitchen, specifically from their stove or its chimney. The chimney connected to many other units in the building before escaping to the roof, so the logic was that it must have been coming from someone in the building. The roof itself was taller than any around it and too isolated to access easily.

No doubt someone could make a voice come from a wood(?) stove by talking at the other end of the pipe or chimney. But how difficult would that be to access in many circumstances, whether the smoke exit is several feet in the air above the roof of a house or part of some labyrinth network of piping in an apartment building? (The more contingent nature of the latter could offer opportunities, however, as well as sound traveling to more than one stove/room. But there's potentially no perspective and means for observing what's transpiring in the apartment.)

EDIT: Ah, I finally got the "chimney connected to many other units" pictured correctly in my head. No labyrinth of pipes required.

How rich must someone be to live in some posh apartment and have a maid? Was she live-in or walk-in? I wonder how many times the maid was left alone in there? Who did she know on the outside? Was she really a maid? Let's have some fun.

You could make up a good espionage tale here... The maid was a spy working in a wealthy family's home put there by some political faction. Maybe she was gathering intel, casing the joint or was playing an elaborate joke. Anyways she would have access/key to allow a partner-in-crime into the place, whenever the owners weren't there. This is the Golden Age of radio in USA but some of the technology was just reaching Spain. The operative with the maid's help was successful in planting a receiver and transmitter somewhere in stove's proximity (floor/walls too). Maybe more than one or they moved it around? So new was radio that no one suspected the place was bugged. By then the operatives could have measured, examined, detailed enough of the apartment and tenants to freak people out when it came time to play the game. (they could have got carried away with the new tech)

What did the apartment's owner know? Was it a coincidence an armed rebellion occurred in Spain one week after the poltergeist showed up? Someone had a lot of fun at people's expense. Radio was so new. Its potential for spying was high and not even suspected. What a diversion. Has the human race ever seen that before?  Rolleyes

That's what rules out hoaxery for me. The voice would address and insult whoever entered the kitchen, it called each of the police officers by name, and called out the measurements of a carpenter doing some rennovation work. So not only would a person have to be hidden somewhere above or in the walls, they would have to be able to see inside the apt and have psychic powers. The sheer magnitude of effort required to pull something like this off just for fun eliminates anything a mature sane human would ever do. It's just one of those bizarre fortean quirks in our reality that we will never fully explain.

MR...here are two accounts of the story. One says Pascuala worked for the Palazon family and the other says it was the Grijaba family. You would think that newsworthy stories would not contain any contradictory facts. Especially if one's trying to authenticate a ghost sighting. Can you explain the discrepancy?

Excerpt: it was said to both ask and answer questions, and took a particular interest in the Palazón’s young maid, Pascuala Alcocer

Is there more misinformation? Does it bring doubt into the equation?

Not at all in my opinion. Why would it?

This is another compelling case of a poltergeist haunting that occurred in the 1990's. It involved a young woman named Jackie Hernandez in San Pedro California and over time several of her friends as well as a parapychologist. This case stands out among other poltergeist cases because it was so persistent and long lasting and hence well-documented. The full range of typical poltergeist activities were manifested: appearance of apparitions, footsteps in an empty attic, glowing lights and orbs, objects moving by themselves, human blood dripping from things, mists or smoke, fires igniting, shoving, red marks on skin, writing on the wall, spirit attachment, being held down in bed, whispers, voices, draining of camera batteries, electrical quirks, coins being thrown, etc. See what you think.
