INTRO: If there is reason for hope that coronavirus fears may mean pro-science beliefs get back to being the norm in modern culture, it is that regular chemicals have disappeared from store shelves in San Francisco while they clamor for vaccines they used to distrust. Meanwhile, there are plenty of organic alternatives and vegan food to be found.

If there is reason for despair it's that 64 percent of British millennials believe the moon landing was fake. Distrust of reality is so endemic that 11 percent of millennials in the country think Tupac Shakur faked his own death and is living in hiding somewhere.... (MORE)

The National Lying Survey

EXCERPT: Ever thought what you were hearing was pure fiction? With the rise of so-called fake news, we wanted to find out the extent of lying habits in the UK and discover what Brits view as fact or fiction. Surveying 2,002 citizens of the UK, this is the Official UK Lying Survey.

(1) Daily Lying Habits. We started off asking participants how often they typically lie on a daily basis and the results reveal a huge difference between the two genders. [...]

(2) Who Brits Lie To. After establishing the frequency of lying habits, we turn our attention to who Brits feel the most comfortable lying to. [...]

(3) Specific Lies to Partners. The juicy part: What are people lying to their romantic partners about? And the answers to the questions in this section are…potentially relationship ending. [...]

(4) Worst Lies Quantified. We asked our 2,000 respondents to reveal the worst lie they’ve told and received. The qualitative data results were manually coded for their themes. For example, the following admission: “I didn't cheat with someone” was coded as infidelity while, “I was told someone's relative was in hospital” was classified under the category family tragedy. [...]

(5) Fact or Fiction? And finally, the final section of our survey asked respondents to answer on what they believed was real and what they believed was fiction.

Starting off with the big issue of our time, just under a third 31.27% of respondents thought climate change was made up, with the biggest sceptics surprisingly being millennials (25-34-year olds 37.65% believe the phenomenon is a lie).

The Moon Landing remains a hot topic among conspiracy theorists and to our surprise, less than half (49.55% of respondents) believe the historical actually happened. What was interesting to note was that the older the age group, the higher the proportion of respondents believe the moon landing was not faked.

It would appear that millennials love a conspiracy theory: along with being the age group most likely to believe the moon landing was fake, they are also the most likely to believe that the planet is controlled by reptilian space lizards (11.45% versus the average of 4.70%). Extrapolated, this data means 2.5 million brits believe in reptilian space overlords.

As the flat earth movement continues to gain momentum, we wanted to see how many brits bought into the theory. Just under 5% of the UK population report stated they believe the earth is flat, equating to 2.28 million Brits. (MORE - details for 1,2,3,4 plus)
