This German man, reportedly in good health reported flu like symptoms. When he experienced shortness of breath and noticed bleeding under the skin on his arms, he sought medical help.
Physicians noted bleeding under the skin of his legs too. Blood tests revealed that his white blood cell and platelet counts were all out of wack. Then his kidneys quit and he stopped urinating. He was placed in intensive care where his heart eventually stopped. They managed to revive him and gave him massive doses of antibiotics. But he died 16 days after being admitted, of massive sepsis and multiple organ failure.
The culprit was determined to be a common bacterium that lives in dogs' mouths. Other reports of infections of this sort have been reported, but only rarely, and only in individuals with compromised immune systems. About 1/4 of those cases are fatal. This is apparently the first recorded case in a healthy individual.
