Government details new co-design process for indigenous Australians

INTRO: Indigenous people fear their feedback will once again be ignored as the federal government attempts to design a Voice to parliament. Today the Minister for Indigenous Australians, Ken Wyatt, detailed a co-design process to integrate indigenous views into local, state and federal decision-making. Former race discrimination commissioner Tom Calma and Melbourne University professor Marcia Langton will lead the year-long consultations.

However, indigenous rights activist Thomas Mayor is deeply sceptical, given Prime Minister Scott Morrison has already ruled out enshrining the Voice in the constitution. A constitutionally enshrined Voice was central to the Uluru Statement from the Heart two years ago, following rigorous debate between indigenous community leaders.

“It’s another co-design process where indigenous people are going to pour their hearts and souls into it and say what they think, and the government is going to ignore it,” Mr Mayor told ABC radio today. “Over and over again we are saying we want power to affect the decisions that are made about us, we want self-determination. It doesn’t matter who they appoint, they’re not going to listen.” He said a constitutionally enshrined Voice was the only way forward.... (MORE)

Prime Minister cracks down on those threatening the coal sector
https://www.news.com.au/national/politic...0af144c47b

INTRO: The Prime Minister Scott Morrison] is examining ways to outlaw the “indulgent” practice of businesses refusing to provide services like banking or insurance to the coal sector. In a speech to the Queensland Resources Council later today, Scott Morrison will tell Australian corporations to listen to the “quiet shareholders” and not environmental protesters. At the same time he will announce a new tertiary education partnership with the mining industry. The Prime Minister’s speech will focus on a threat to the future of mining, which he claims is coming from a “new breed of radical activism”.

“Apocalyptic in tone. It brooks no compromise. It’s all or nothing. Alternative views are not permitted,” Mr Morrison will say. He will point out the “worrying development” of environmental groups targeting businesses or firms involved in the mining sector. Mr Morrison will also address businesses that are refusing to provide banking, insurance or consultancy to businesses in the coal sector. (MORE)

Labor’s new spin on climate change crisis
https://www.news.com.au/technology/envir...2e307907b4

EXCERPT: Anthony Albanese ... will strongly urge Australians to welcome measures combating climate change as a source of jobs and exports, not as a drain on finances and employment. The Opposition Leader, in the first of a series of so-called headland speeches, will reshape Labor’s policy arguments for greater efforts to limit climate change and present innovation as the hope of the economy. [...]

In the May 18 election campaign the then Labor leader Bill Shorten struggled to sell voters the party’s policy because he was unable to say how much it would cost business and taxpayers. Further, Labor was punished in electorates linked to the coal industry, particularly in Queensland, by voters who saw climate change policy strangling work opportunities.

Mr Albanese wants to address the positive of a policy as part of his intention to nominate job creation as Labor’s priority. [...] And he will reject the standard political warning that workers fear innovation because they see that as code for them being replaced by new technology. ... Mr Albanese will spotlight the potential for hydrogen power as an energy source which could be exported to our major trading partners including Japan and South Korea. He will argue that innovation which boosts productivity would ensure our economy could fund a “a proper, fair” welfare safety net, a cleaner environment, education and health.... And Mr Albanese will nominate the mineral that could be the hope of the economy: lithium, a prime element for the growing battery technology. (MORE)
