Havana Syndrome first came to attention in August 2017, when it was reported that US and Canadian diplomats in Cuba suffered from a diverse array of health problems, including loss of balance, lack of sleep, difficulties in concentration and memory retention and headaches.
Friedman discussed his research with the Canadian Broadcasting Service who would then report it to the Canadian government before it was peer-reviewed and published. An unknown source leaked the report. The peer-review process is still ongoing, and it is due to be published online at medRxiv.org in an effort to provide full transparency to the medical community and to dispel any ambiguity regarding the findings.
