Yep. Most of us have probably had an elderly or out of shape relative that either died while sitting on the throne or got shipped off in an ambulance from a sudden event. But weaning people from that design might be equivalent to convincing Russians to give up vodka or relaxing the American passion for firearms.

In some rural areas of the early 20th century, the outhouse was still going strong and similarly contributed to the 90-degree angle. Apparently minus that culprit plumbing innovation even entering the picture as the cause. Before the dominance of pages from Sears&Roebuck catalogs replacing it, the corncob hanging from a string (or several in a bucket) was a mainstay feature of the "earth-closet". Probably contributed to a certain urban dictionary expression which need not be mentioned here.

I used to squat all the time when I took a crap. I preferred it.

But it's harder for older people to do that when their knees and hips get less cooperative.
