A local Vegas entomologist says that these grasshoppers live in the desert south of Vegas into Arizona and multiply after rains. Last winter had abundant rain. Sometimes they migrate north into central Nevada. (Who can blame them for wanting to stop off for a little fun in Vegas?) He says that they are harmless, don't carry disease and won't damage anything.

I beg to differ! You drive through a cloud of them and splatter half a dozen of them. Then you stop for gas and the yellowjackets find the dead bugs and start eating them. And then when you go to check the oil - you get stung. (Happened to me!)
