Personally I'm with Darwin on this one. Boy and girl get drunk together. Boy has boat, they go out in boat, girl has a go at the wheel and for some reason that may or not have been the girl's fault the boat overturns and they end up in the water. Girl drowns and boy survives. Headline (and jury verdict) 'Boy kills girl.". Additional evidence seems to be that he left her to drown. Further evidence appears to be that once both parties were in the water he did not exactly 'choose not to rescue her' - he had no particular skill to call on that might have enabled him to rescue her.
