The infamous original is one of the most remembered hurts in North American sports history. Thus why the calendar parallelism and other details were immediately noticed.

Alex Smith's and Joe Theismann's injuries share two really eerie coincidences (more than two!)

EXCERPTS: Exactly 33 years to the day after [Joe] Theismann’s gruesome injury during a nationally televised game, [Alex] Smith went down with breaks to his right fibia and tibia midway through the third quarter of Washington’s 23-21 loss to the visiting Houston Texans on Sunday...(LINK)

Washington will be without its starting quarterback for the rest of the season. Alex Smith had to be carted from the field in the third quarter of Sunday's game against the Texans after suffering a gruesome lower leg injury. [...]

Joe Theismann, who had his career ended by a similar (and oft-replayed) hit on this day 33 years ago, saw the similarities between the two gruesome tackles immediately.

"Alex’s leg is exactly like mine 33 yrs ago." --Joe Theismann

Theismann, coincidentally enough, was at FedEx Field to watch Smith’s injury live Sunday afternoon. That wasn’t the only coincidence either:

"Not only did Alex Smith's injury happen 33 years to the day of Joe Theismann's...the final score of both games was 23-21. ...and both injuries took place at the 40 yard line." --Allan Bell
