Borrowing from Irish and English traditions, Americans began to dress up in costumes and go house to house asking for food or money, a practice that eventually became today’s “trick-or-treat” tradition.

These days it often seems like mixed signals from the UK, though maybe it's only it terms of intensity rather than practices. For every source where the celebration of Halloween sounds familiar to North America's, there seems to be another playing it down.
