Racist Serena Williams cartoon is sadly illustrative of Australian cartoonists

The cartoons might be "iffy" if 'iffy' means 'politically  incorrect'.

For example this "racist" cartoon:

But crime committed by African youth gangs does appear to be a major issue in Melbourne.

"The death of a South Sudanese teenager in Melbourne's CBD was a "tragic and needless" loss of young life, but indicative of a "major law and order problem" in Victoria, Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton has said... Mr Dutton's comments come days after Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull renewed the debate over crime among African-Australian youths."

"African gang crime is "out of control" in parts of Victoria and tougher sentencing laws are needed, Federal Minister Greg Hunt says, but police insist they are on top of Melbourne's youth crime problem."

"Victorian police have conceded Melbourne has a problem with African street gangs, after earlier insisting there were no gangs in the city, as the State Government rejects criticism it has dropped the ball on the problem."

I think that's the context of the politically incorrect cartoon and why it showed teenage black perpetrators committing crimes freely while a local politician looks the other way. The occasion seems to have been this Victorian state government official depicted in the cartoon acting decisively to protect the people of Melbourne by banning Sky News from the video feed shown in the public transit stations because the network voiced unwelcome opinion. The cartoonist seemingly felt that while the state government was busily trying to silence ideas it didn't like, it was simultaneously turning its back on the crime problem that it didn't want to acknowledge, that was growing into a crisis and had people afraid to use the subway tubes.

Yeah, I agree. There’s several other caricatures of African American teens that no one seems to have a problem with e.g., Gerald Johanssen, but they’re also claiming that the Serena cartoon was sexist.

"Again, this is his interpretation of what he actually saw.

Because Mark Knight’s cartoon is racist.

Maybe Knight genuinely doesn’t know he has a prejudiced and sexist view of the world. Perhaps he hasn’t had his bones tested for bigotry yet. It is believable that Mark and the Herald Sun thought they were providing much-needed, insightful commentary that the world’s greatest athlete couldn’t keep her composure even though she has been castigated and marginalized for her gender, wardrobe, hair, husband, body and even her skin color and continues to kick ass even with a whole human being inside her."

Why the Cartoon is Racist/Sexist Trash

I don’t understand how they can claim that it’s sexist. This was his response to that allegation. His twitter account is no longer available. There’s reports saying that he received a bunch of death threats.

Been a basketball referee for over 30 years and hardly a season goes past where I'm not called a racist. Since I'm white I hear this from mostly non whites but I have even heard whites say I'm favoring non whites because I'm too intimidated by prevailing social attitude. IOW I'm accused of developing stereotypes I guess. But it is the heat of battle, fierce competition and the urge to win at all costs that probably influences what is said to me. I've had parents/fans enter my changeroom to berate me and hurl accusations, a police escort out of a facility (my fellow official was target of angry fans) and one time a parent made a shooting gun motion towards me with their hands. I just write them up and let the powers decide about sanctions. .

The person SS was quoting says:

Quote:Maybe Knight genuinely doesn’t know he has a prejudiced and sexist view of the world.

Or maybe Knight doesn't have "a prejudiced and sexist view of the world". Maybe he just expresses opinions the writer doesn't like.

Quote:It is believable that Mark and the Herald Sun thought they were providing much-needed, insightful commentary that the world’s greatest athlete

"World's greatest athlete"? That's debatable. She is a good tennis player, for what that's worth.

Quote:couldn’t keep her composure even though she has been castigated and marginalized for her gender, wardrobe, hair, husband, body and even her skin color

"Castigated and marginalized"? She's a multi-millionaire celebrity. (Reports put her net worth at $180 million.) She almost certainly gets the VIP treatment wherever she goes. She's surrounded by people telling her how wonderful she is every waking moment.

That's probably why she exploded at the tournament. She just wasn't used to anyone saying anything to her she didn't like hearing, so when that was combined with her losing a hard-fought tournament to a little known newcomer, she responded like a child.

It was an uncontrolled reaction to frustration.

It's not like tennis players have never been caricaturized by cartoonists in the past and this just happened to (the misnamed) Serena because she's black and female. John McEnroe was caricatured by cartoonists all the time for his childish antics.

You do realize that I didn't write that, right?  Yazata assumed it was a woman but the author is a man. It was Michael Harriot.

Yep, that's why I wrote, "I'd like to see their results before they go shaking fingers at anyone."
