Saw a promotional poster for that somewhere on a movie channel's online portal; had no idea what it was about apart from what the title suggested. Guess will have to check it out if it's a grade above the usual Schwarzenegger or Robocop template for cyborgs slash whatever. "The film received positive reviews from critics..."

Looks like Dirty Harry meets cyborg implant Baymax.

Part of the trailer reminds me something of a scifi plot line I considered.

In a nutshell the protagonist knows they are apart of a chain of events that creates a future tech that they aren't allowed to use before the world has caught up with the technologies capacity to exist (in essence the rules for it's usage is that the protagonist can't use the technology before it's naturally available.) However in the most extreme of cases (a pending threat) they can ask permission to utilise the technology to increase survivability chances. (This is a necessity as the protagonist is a necessary puzzle piece in the technologies development, their loss would mean the technology never comes into fruition.)

I enjoyed the overall execution but didn't like the ending. I'm not adverse to tragedies, but it was a rather purposeless loss.

A little reminiscent of Ex Machina as far as both films...
... involving an AI clandestinely entering society. No contest as to which one would ironically be more convincing in terms of behavior, though.

Before *Upgrade* was released, Whannell was confident that there would not be a sequel. In early June, however, he sounded slightly less pessimistic due to it being clear that it would at least break even at the box-office.

Apparently Blum waited (Aug 13) until it was clear that the film had made well over twice as much as it cost to announce that there was a possible sequel. Surely still uncertain since $13.5 million is far from the blockbuster status that usually gets a green light.

Yeah, Ex Machina had a similarly unsatisfying ending. I actually went into that one half expecting the Domhnall Gleeson character to be the real AI being tested. Would have made for a better story/twist, IMO.

Unless the main human character from Upgrade returns, I don't see a point to a sequel.

Electrical Pulses Help Paralyzed Patients Move

"Four people who were paralyzed below the waist for more than two years were able to voluntarily wiggle their toes and flex their legs, thanks to a promising study that some are heralding as a breakthrough in spinal-cord-injury treatment."

And four years later…

From Wheelchairs to Walkers

"These data leave big questions about what's next. These are just case studies, really, the lowest level of medical evidence. More rigorous studies will be needed. And it's not clear at all exactly why this worked, or how, or, most importantly, who will benefit most. "Now I think the real challenge starts, and that’s understanding how this happened, why it happened, and which patients will respond, says Kristin Zhao, Ph.D., co-principal investigator and director of Mayo Clinic’s Assistive and Restorative Technology Laboratory, in a prepared statement.

Better medical devices will be needed in order to run larger studies, says Louisville's Harkema."The hurdle is the technology," she says. "The technology is just off the shelf for pain. It's not designed for this use." The next step, she says, is for Medtronic or another device company to design a device that is adapted for treating spinal cord patients.

"This tells you there is hope in the future," says Mushahwar. "The technology is developing, and it is developing at a faster rate than you would expect."

They’re not ninjas yet but this is amazing, isn't it?
