Well then, a little protein doesn't hurt. No doubt when you're out hunter/gathering in that lovely garden you planted or plucking the feathers from that chicken you raised that there's a concern about making sure it's all clean before consumption takes place.

So have you ever watched an animal chow down anything it catches or nibbles on. Ever think that they're getting more than they bargained for as in bugs, germs, dirt etc. It's only natural, right? They have built in immunities and can handle it, no? We're careful about that aren't we?

Not so fast. Those same contaminants were obviously consumed by our ancestors, yet people think it doesn't work like that anymore. Well think again and remember it's only natural but within limits. The FDA has determined what those acceptable limits are. My gut feeling is (npi) that as long as we're convinced our food is clean, we'll eat it. However the truth may be hard to swallow...

Bon appetit!

Having to eat uncooked insects, arachnids, and snails that contain parasitic nematodes would be the real horror.

Or crawly critters that feed largely on poisonous plants and fungi.

Or brightly colored bugs and shell dwellers.

Or hairy, fuzzy multi-legged entities which generate mouth and throat irritation.

Or beetle sprayers of stinking and burning liquid (maybe consequences even if they're dead).

Levels of natural or unavoidable defects in foods that present no health hazards for humans:-

Of cornmeal..
Average of 1 or more rodent hairs per 25 grams
OR
Average of 1 or more rodent excreta fragment per 50 grams
SIGNIFICANCE: Aesthetic

Kind'a confirms my view that my little furry friends aren't really a health hazard. If your food already has rat shit in it - a little more isn't going to make any difference (except possibly aesthetically).

Latest picnic I attended had the odd fly or wasp landing on the food at some point. Couldn't tell you if those insects last touched a pile of shit before that. Didn't stop me or anyone else for that matter. I guess what you don't know won't hurt you. Big Grin
